Fitness Fair & Fun Run Sponsorship
Dear Community Supporter,
We are asking for your support in helping raise community awareness around the important issue of Childhood obesity prevention. Although adult diseases in children can also occur due to genetic and environmental reasons, there has been a 400% increase in the number of obese children of ages 6 years and older in the last two and a half decades. Obesity is a health risk, which has been accepted by all experts.
What the Kitsap County Medical Society Foundation is doing to help: The KCMSF is embarking on their sixth year with a fitness and nutrition program in Kitsap County. We have created an annual program that rewards children for healthy eating and exercise. The two-month program is introduced in the spring by PE teachers at reaches over 20K Kitsap County students. The children are encouraged to record physical activity on a log sheet working towards enough miles to add up to a marathon. They also record healthy eating and are rewarded with toe-tokens from their PE teacher and with the KCMSF. The grand celebration for the program is the family fun run this year to be held on April 29, 2012 at the Bremerton Fairgrounds Presidents Hall. There will be fitness and nutrition booths and raffle prizes. The program's success is measured by the dozens of letters we receive from families, positive comments from PE teachers and also the turn out at the Family Fun Run. Since 2008 we have hit 1000 + participants! The goal with this program is to promote the message that fitness is fun and that healthy eating habits are important to our quality of life. The result...less childhood obesity and a healthier Kitsap County!
Childhood Obesity exposes children to the following health problems:
•Hypertension •Type 2 Diabetes •Orthopedic complications •Sleep apnea •Depression •AsthmaThe US Dept. of Health recommends at least 60 minutes of physical activity for children on most, preferably all, days of the week. Inadequate physical activity & poor eating habits are major contributors to the increased rates of childhood obesity & overweight in the United States. This puts obese children at greater risk for chronic disease & premature death. Public Health & Medical professionals have begun to speculate that the current generation of children may be the first that will not live as long as their parents.
